Overview
On this episode of Build Your Network, Host Travis Chappell interviews Jon Schumacher, Webinar Specialist, and Online Marketing Consultant. He’s the founder of Marketing Mastery Media, LLC and co-founder of Client Mint, LLC.
Topics Discussed:
- Who is Jon Schumacher:
- Been all-in in the webinar and video space in the last 3-4 years.
- Had a career in healthcare before getting started in marketing.
- Loves helping people share their messages through webinars and other tools to attract more clients.
- What did Jon want to do before landing on webinars?
- Was a shy kid, never thought he would be on camera.
- As a four-year-old he wanted to be a dinosaur.
- Struggled in school, didn’t feel like he could fit in.
- Next wanted to be an athlete, and was most of his life.
- This is how he got into health, fitness, and physical therapy.
- The transition from physical therapy and online business:
- When he first got started, he was in his early 20’s.
- He tried a lot of different areas online, but hadn’t replaced his income.
- He got started creating his ebook, that was his first online sale.
- Continued to take courses, learn, and consume a lot of information.
- Was working a full-time job and then came home to work on his business.
- It took a while to replace his full-time income because he didn’t know where to start.
- What got him to quit was that he finally found something that was good that he could sell – a course.
- Saved up money and continued to work at his full-time job.
- Had a year of expenses saved up when he quit.
- His coach encouraged him to quit.
- The online space changes every day, you always have to be innovating.
- His family has been pretty supportive in the transition.
- Is what you know or who you know more important and why?
- It’s a combination of both:
- You have to know, study, and be obsessed with your craft to be good at it.
- You need actionable, implementable systems and frameworks to help people.
- Ultimately, people are who “up-level” you.
- You need to get around people who are smarter than you and be okay looking stupid.
- You can’t separate one from the other, but if you want to up-level fast you need to meet the right people.
- You always rise to the level of who you’re hanging out with.
- To make a big jump in skills, you need to be playing with someone who’s much better than you are.
- Is there a mentor or friend who pointed you in the right direction?
- You can meet people in-person and online – part of how Jon met people was online and through interview content.
- A client of his, he met through a friend. He made the connection through his network.
- Collaborating with people is extremely important.
- Without a powerful network, how far behind would you be?
- He would have never gotten to this point.
- He wouldn’t have had the confidence to get where he’s at without his initial partnership.
- It’s not his natural tendency to sell or be “salesy.”
- He’s acquired a lot of growth and strategy from brilliant people.
- He gets to see what’s working for them and what isn’t.
- He does a weekly mastermind to collaborate with really smart people.
- Why do so many people neglect to build their inner circle?
- Not knowing where to focus, they’re distracted.
- A lot of people spend all of their time creating content and don’t understand the importance of networking.
- A lot of people are shy and don’t want to get rejected, they don’t feel like they’re “up to snuff.”
- Jon’s biggest motivator was his own freedom, he wanted to leave his job so bad he was willing to go through mental pain.
- If you’re not naturally a people person, you need to push past it and your motivator has to be big enough.
- You have to be willing to be uncomfortable otherwise you’ll get stuck.
- You need to know your why. Your dreams need to be bigger than your fears.
- He has to force himself to do things sometimes, such as conferences.
- You have to be willing to keep moving forward even if it’s painful.
- The more failure and pain you’ve taken, the stronger you get.
- You need to take care of yourself, eat well, and have energy.
- Starting your business is not an easy income.
- Know that you’ll be okay, if something doesn’t work – you’ll be okay, even if everybody tells you no.
- How important have paid masterminds and paid mentorships been to your success?
- He participates in a free mastermind, he hasn’t paid for a mastermind.
- He’s worked with a handful of paid 1-1 coaches to talk about business related info who have different perspectives.
- He thinks these relationships are important, especially 1-1 because you get their undivided attention.
- One tip about growing your circle:
- Getting involved with other people and collaborating.
- Interviewing people allows you to grow your audience and get in front of other people’s audiences.
- You won’t have everything you need to grow by yourself.
